Menu

By default, every windows system has a Windows Update option (accessible through the start menu) that normally allows users to secure the operating system by downloading the latest patches from the Microsoft website. However, in the last few year, a number of virus infection in different parts of the world have proved that it is possible for malicious viruses to modify the default Windows Update website to point to some other malicious website. This malicious modification is then exploited to download update versions of the same virus.

Hence, a number of system administrators have started looking for options to prevent users from using the Windows Update option manually. This tweak, too, is extremely easy to execute in the following steps:

Step-1 Open the Windows Update option by clicking on the START Orb Button and typing Windows Update in the search field.

Step-2 In the left column click on the Change Settings option. This will allow you to change the settings of Windows update. Now select the Never Check for Updates option. This will ensure that Windows Update will not automatically run. You can also control which users can install updaes on a machine using this Change Settings page.

An even better technique of disabling the Windows Update option is to disable the service running each time Windows boots. This can easily be done by following the steps below:

Step-3 Open control panel and click on the Administrative Tools option.

Step-4 Now double click on Services and scroll down till you find Windows Update. Right click on it and then select Properties.

Step-5 In the Start Up Type option you can select the Disable option to prevent the Windows Update service from starting automatically whenever Windows boots.
