In Windows it is possible to right click a particular file to reveal the OPEN WITH option, which gives you a list of applications with which you can open the selected file. Whenever you install a new application that opens a file type, then Windows will make the necessary changes to the OPEN WITH menu option. Also whenever you open a file with a new application (that is normally not used to open that file type) then Windows will automatically add that application to the OPEN WITH option. This means that with time, your OPEN WITH menu option can become quite cluttered and sometimes may even contain some wrong entries. This is a wonderful registry tweak comes into the picture which allows you to clean up the OPEN WITH menu option.
Step-1 Open the Windows Registry by typing regedit in the search box in the Start menu.
Step-2 Navigate to the registry hive below:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\

Step-3 In this registry key you will see all the file extensions listed. Select the file extension for which you wish to change the OPEN WITH menu options and then click on the OpenWithList key. I am going to select the .txt extension.
Step-4 On the tight panel all the applications that appear in the OPEN WITH menu for .txt files will appear. You can delete any applications that you don’t want appearing in the OPEN WITH menu options by deleting the respective registry entry. As simple as that!
